Used Engines Are Easy To Find And Cheap As Ever…

September 22, 2008 by gotengines

I am writing today to talk about used engines. I know my articles have been about every type of engine on the market, but in todays market…used engines seem to be the bread winner.

I’ve been known to steer customers towards a remanufactured engine, only because it’s pratically a new engine. But I’m taking my time today to tell you that a used engine is still a wise choice if you buy right and know what kind of things you should be looking for.

First off, mileage is important. With the costs of engine installations these days, you don’t want to make a mistake putting a junker engine in your car or you’ll be extremely upset with yourself. What I’m saying is, buy an engine with reasonable mileage. Don’t buy someting with over 100,000 miles just because you’re saving a few bucks. Spend a couple extra hundred dollards and get something that will last.

Get a warranty that makes sense. The warranty is where you might have a fast one pulled on you if you don’t ask the right questions. Warranties can be 30 days to even lifetime. But you need to ask for the warranty that best suits your needs. If you’re buying an engine with 80,000 miles on it, I would personally make sure I purchased a parts AND labor warranty. In some cases the person you’re buying your engine will not specify the warranty is parts only. When you get a parts only warranty (which isn’t always a bad choice depending on the engine) if the engine get’s installed and it doesn’t turn over, guess who’s paying the labor to install that junk engine and take it back out to put ANOTHER one back in. Paying double installation fees will set you back up to $1,000! The point is…find out what kind of warranty you’re getting, ask them if it covers parts and labor.

Ask who’s covering the shipping on engine. You might get a quote for a killer price on your engine and come to find out after you gave your credit card number up that the price didn’t cover shipping. This is something you should ask right away. Does the price cover shipping? Do you know how much it costs to ship an engine? It usually averages around $350!

Ask if the engine has been compression checked. If the engine isn’t holding compression, its not worth buying.

Other things you may want to know…

Is the engine sitting outside?

Has it been sitting outside during the winter time?

Has the engine been started?

Did the vehicle come from a wrecked vehicle?

Did the vehicle get hit in the front?

Where is the engine located?

And these are just to name a few.
